Ho-Chunk Inc. planning to invest $100M in Sioux City area

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska’s economic development arm is planning to invest more than $100 million in the Sioux City area over the next 10 years.

The Sioux City Journal reports that Ho-Chunk Inc. was expected to highlight several of its economic development projects on Thursday.

Projects include a 200-acre housing and commercial addition in South Sioux City, Nebraska, and two other commercial projects in downtown Sioux City, Iowa. The corporation is also planning a $7.5 million upscale apartment complex in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota.

Ho-Chunk officials took interest in South Sioux City’s riverfront after a Sioux City pork plant closed in 2010. Odor from the aging slaughter plant carried across the river, which had discouraged building homes there.
