SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota’s Crow Creek Sioux Tribe is joining with a Los Angeles-based company to develop a $39 million fuel plant.

It would turn municipal waste into a fuel or fuel additive called Torqazine. An official with EcoTech Fuels, a division of Victory Circle Fuels, plans to travel to South Dakota this week to help choose a site for the plant.

Officials say it would convert 100 tons of landfill waste per day to between 200 and 400 barrels of fuel, and create about 40 jobs.

Company founder Linda-Rose Myers estimates it will take 22 months to design and build a plant, and to secure federal permits.

Chairman Brandon Sazue says tribal leaders need to be convinced the plant will be environmentally friendly. But he says it looks promising.
