BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – Montana’s Board of Public Education has adopted new standards for art, health and physical education in K-12 schools.

The updated standards focus on emotional and mental wellbeing in health classes and for art shift classes to include digital media and greater offerings for dance, theatre and music.

The new standards set specific goals for each grade at the elementary level, and for middle school and high school as a whole. The changes comply with Indian Education for All, a constitutional requirement that schools teach native American culture.

The Montana Office of Public Instruction has designated $27,000 for health and P.E. teacher training and about $53,000 for art.

The new standards will go into effect on July 1, 2017.
