FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) – The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council at a meeting Tuesday tabled a petition seeking a reservation-wide vote on whether to support the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.

A tribal spokeswoman did not cite a reason. Some council members have said previously that they oppose a vote on the nickname because Standing Rock has more pressing matters to deal with.

The state Board of Higher Education has decided to retire the nickname, which some including the NCAA find offensive. But some nickname supporters say the Standing Rock tribe should have more time to respond to the issue.

Gov. John Hoeven said last month that the Board of Higher Education should give “due consideration” to the results of any Standing Rock tribal referendum on the nickname.
