Students organizing Haskell's first sorority

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – A pair of students at Haskell Indian Nations University are trying to start up the school's first sorority.

Corey LeRoy and Ariane Franklin told the Lawrence Journal-World that membership in Alpha Pi Omega, the nation's oldest American Indian sorority, would give female students a chance to connect with each other.

The two organizers and three other members who were initiated last month are working on an organizational constitution. They will receive provisional status once the document is approved, and the Haskell chapter could get full status by summer 2011.

LeRoy says she hopes the sorority will give female students an alternative to drinking and partying around Lawrence.

Alpha Pi Omega was started in 1994 and has nearly 400 members representing more than 70 tribes.
