CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. (AP) – The Chamberlain School District has adopted a cultural standards resolution, after three months of discussion and four drafts.
The effort to address racial issues in the district gained steam after some students wore “White Pride” T-shirts to school last spring and four of them went home after refusing to change. American Indians make up about one-third of the district's students.
A parent-led group calling itself the Coalition for Cultural Equality had pushed for a cultural resolution even before the incident.
The resolution approved by the school board stipulates that the school district will foster inclusion, equality and diversity in the community.
