ST. LOUIS (AP) – The national Parents as Teachers program is getting $14.2 million in federal stimulus money to provide early childhood education for American Indian families.
The award to the St. Louis-based Parents as Teachers from the U.S. Department of Education was announced Tuesday. It is in addition to $2.8 million in private matching funds.
The grant money will be used to support the BabyFACE project, which will work through 24 Bureau of Indian Education schools in six states – Arizona, South Dakota, New Mexico, Washington, Idaho and North Carolina.
The program will include home visits, health and developmental screenings for children up to age 5, along with activities focusing on tribal cultures and languages.
