BUFFALO, Wyoming – The Professional Indian Horse Racing Association (PIHRA) along with the Buffalo, Wyoming Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson Country Fair Board are proud to announce the opening PIHRA-sanctioned Indian relay event will take place in historic Buffalo, Wyoming at the Johnson County Fairgrounds on June 11 and June 12, 2016. The schedule has been announced and includes events on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. Large crowds are expected, so spectators are encouraged to arrive at least one hour before the event. Gates will open two hours before the event each day.
Prior to the opening ceremonies, the audience will be entertained by the Crow Indian Nation singers and drummers.
Opening ceremonies will honor military veterans with the well-known Northern Cheyenne Honor Guard and the Crow Mounted Veterans. Following the Grand Entry, the Relay Races will be run in four heats. There are top teams coming from South Dakota, Lakota War Path and Brew Crew. Eastern Montana teams include War Man, Charges Strong, Medicine Tail, Plain Feather, and Medicine Horse. From Western Montana, White Calf, Young Money, Pikuni Express, and Eagle Star Express will participate.
Veteran Native American announcers, Kennard Real Bird and Randy Taylor, will make the experience even more exciting with their interactive and colorful native commentary and moment-by-moment account of the explosive action.
More than 20 adult relay teams are expected to compete. In between the relay races, the audience will be treated to a Warriors Race, Ladies Race, Kids Relay and a Junior Relay which makes for an action-packed event for the entire family.
Three levels of tickets are available. Box Seats are available at $30 per day or two days for $50. General Admission Adult $20 per day or two days for $30; Kids under 12 General Admission are $12.50 per day or two days for $20. Infield tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Seating is limited in the infield and spectators may bring chairs.
Tickets are available now online at www.letsrelay.com and at the following locations in Buffalo: Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, Sagewood Gifts and Café, and Sports Lure; in Sheridan, at Shipton’s Big R; and in Kaycee, at the Invasion Bar and the Kaycee Sinclair Deli/Store/Motel. Ticket sales will close at these outlets in the afternoon of Thursday, June 9. Tickets will be available for sale at the event. Credit cards will be accepted, but cash pay lines will move faster. Pre-paid tickets are preferred for a speedy entry.
The races will take place rain or shine. Parking for the event is free. Day sheets with schedule and team descriptions will be available for $3.
Championship points for the year-end PIHRA All Nations Indian Relay Championships will be awarded at this first race of the season in Buffalo. Plus, over $50,000 will be awarded in cash, prizes, and expense reimbursement, making Buffalo Days one of the most significant races of the season.
Each season there are 15-20 sanctioned races where PIHRA member teams earn valuable points to secure an invitation to the finals in Billings. Montana at the All Nations Indian Relay Championships, September 22-25, 2016. Over 50 member teams and as many as 16 Indian nations compete all summer long in hopes to earn a spot at this coveted event that has been described as the Super Bowl of Indian relay!
An estimated $100,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded at the Championships and the season-end high point team winner will be awarded a first place prize of $10,000.
