MISSION, S.D. (AP) – The Rosebud Indian Reservation is one of 27 communities nationwide that's been selected to participate in a new federal initiative that aims to increase economic opportunities for local farmers and improve the quality of life in rural communities.

The Local Foods, Local Places initiative is a collaboration among six federal agencies that will work with communities in 22 states. The Rosebud Economic Development Corp. in Mission is the only South Dakota group selected for the state.

The government says the group will receive technical assistance to establish a hub of healthy activity centered on local food. The plan is to use a new trail system that links the local grocery store, community garden, farmers market, creek and wetlands.
