BANGOR, Maine (AP) – A federal judge in Maine has sentenced a North Carolina man to a year of probation for embezzling money from the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point.

Court records say 68-year-old Stephen Crawford, of Beaufort, fraudulently obtained more than $25,000 from the tribe while working as its environmental director.

The records say he submitted fraudulent travel expense reports and supporting documents while working as the director between 2006 and 2012.

Judge John A. Woodcock says Crawford will be barred from working on federal contracts for a period of time as a result of his conviction.

Crawford paid more than $25,000 in restitution prior to his sentencing.
