HAVRE, Mont. (AP) – The Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council wants the state of Montana to investigate the death of a Native American man who had been held at the Hill County jail in Havre.

A.J. Long Soldier Jr. died at Northern Montana Hospital on Nov. 23 of what a coroner found to be acute alcohol withdrawal. He was 18 and had been arrested four days earlier on a misdemeanor warrant.

The council wrote to the attorney general's office asking for an investigation. A spokesman says the office is reviewing the letter.

Council chairman James Steele Jr. questioned whether anyone would be held accountable for the “obviously incorrect assessment” of Long Soldier's serious medical condition. The council also questioned whether race was a factor in his treatment, and why Long Soldier wasn't released on a notice to appear in court so he could seek medical care.
