OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Two people who were convicted in unrelated federal cases for stealing money from the Santee Sioux Tribe have been given five years of probation and ordered to pay restitution.
A release from the office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg in Omaha says 52-year-old Karen Red Owl and 41-year-old Duane Whipple had embezzled from the tribe's reservation operations in northeast Nebraska.
The release says Red Owl used her position in the Santee Sioux tribal court to alter deposit slips and steal nearly $9,200 from the tribe's bank account.
The release says Whipple used his position in the tribe's finance office to steal more than $21,500.
