FREDONIA, Ariz. (AP) – An American Indian reservation on the Arizona-Utah border has been designated an International Dark Sky Community.

About 250 people live on the Kaibab (KY’-bab) Paiute (PY’-oot) reservation near Fredonia.

The International Dark-Sky Association says tribal officials have implemented a plan for outdoor lighting that values dark skies. Annual events at the Pipe Spring National Monument that lies within the reservation highlight the importance of natural darkness to the tribe’s culture, traditions and future generations.

Tribal Chairman Roland Maldonado says dark skies also are a valued part of wildlife conservation.

The tribe’s environment director, Daniel Bullets, says the designation as a dark sky community is an honor and will bring awareness to light pollution.
