VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – The Cowlitz Indian Tribe has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to handle sewage at its future casino outside La Center by injecting treated wastewater into the ground.

The Columbian reports that the bid comes after the tribe’s proposal to connect to La Center’s sewer system was denied.

According to the plan, the tribe will use a membrane bioreactor system to treat wastewater before sending up to 400,000 gallons a day into the ground.

Tribe Chairman William Iyall says the bioreactor is designed to meet federal drinking water standards. The Tulalip, Nisqually, Skagit, Squaxin and Grand Ronde Tribes have been allowed to build similar injection systems on Tribal Trust lands.
