MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) – The state Board of Minerals and Environment on Wednesday decided oil wells should be allowed near Bear Butte but not as many as previously permitted.

The Daily Republic newspaper reports that the board revoked its 2010 order that would have allowed an oil field with as many as 24 wells within 1.5 miles of the American Indian religious site near Sturgis. That permit would have allowed wells on private land inside the boundary of the national historic site.

The board agreed on a new order Wednesday that limits the number of wells to five and requires that they be drilled outside the boundary of the historic site.
