Lummi Nation opposes coal-export shipping terminal

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) – Leaders of the Lummi Nation say they're opposing a proposed coal-export terminal at Cherry Point near Bellingham.

The Bellingham Herald reports (http://is.gd/MWfT6i) that tribal leaders are concerned the development of a shipping terminal to ship Rocky Mountain coal and other bulk cargo may disturb ancestral burial sites, affect their fishing rights and create other environmental problems.

SSA Marine senior vice-president Bob Watters says the company is taking precautions to protect cultural resources on the Gateway Pacific Terminal property and is working with the tribe to avoid fishing impacts.

Supporters of the project have said it will create jobs and bring in revenues for local and state governments, while opponents have raised concerns about train traffic and potential harm to health and the environment.
