Judge to hear Fremont County voting arguments

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – A federal judge is set to hear arguments about what sort of new voting system Fremont County should adopt.
U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson in Cheyenne has set a hearing for Tuesday afternoon on the voting issue.
Johnson ruled this spring that Fremont County's system of at-large voting for county commissioners violated federal law by diluting the voting rights of American Indians. The county includes most of the Wind River Indian Reservation.
The county asked Johnson to approve designating a single commission district in which American Indians would be the majority. It wants to continue with at-large elections elsewhere.
The American Indian plaintiffs want single-member districts for all commissioners.
