RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – An Oglala Sioux tribal official says there is a shortage of police officers on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Isaac Last Horse, chairman of the tribe’s board of trustees, says a full contingent of officers would be 51 but the police department has just 36.

Last Horse tells the Rapid City Journal that many officers have taken jobs in North Dakota, where higher wages are paid.

One tribal police officer was fired last month after she was of accused of improperly using a stun gun on an unconscious man lying on the ground.

Last Horse says the incident did not reflect poorly on the tribal police chief, who followed established policies and procedures in the wake of the event.
