Second chief candidates may file for office with the tribe’s election board Nov. 3-5. The primary election will be Dec. 13 and the general election, if needed, will be Jan. 10, 2015.

OKMULGEE, Okla. — With the office of second chief now vacant, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation has announced its timeline for a special election.

On Monday, Principal Chief George Tiger issued a proclamation laying out the dates for the election. The move was necessitated by the resignation of now former second chief Roger Barnett earlier this month after he pleaded guilty in federal court to embezzling tribal funds.

As per Tiger’s proclamation, second chief candidates may file for office with the tribe’s election board Nov. 3-5. The primary election will be Dec. 13 and the general election, if needed, will be Jan. 10, 2015.

The winner will serve about 14 months. The timeline for absentee ballot requests is at the discretion of the tribe’s election board and has not been announced as of Monday evening.
