TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) – A member of a northern Michigan Indian tribe’s council has been charged with criminal sexual conduct involving two girls over the past several years.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/1H0QHSS ) that Derek Bailey was arraigned Monday in 86th District Court and the 42-year-old was ordered held without bond. A May 19 hearing is planned.

Bailey’s lawyer Craig Elhart says Bailey was despondent after being charged with something he didn’t do.

The member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Council faces two criminal cases that stem from a Leelanau County sheriff’s department investigation after the girls said they were sexually assaulted multiple times.

Bailey was arrested late Friday. Court documents say the girls involved were between 13 and 15 years old.
