SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — The Citizen Potawatomi Nation has filed a lawsuit against the city of Shawnee in tribal court over damage caused when a waterline burst last year.

The Oklahoman reports that the tribe's Heritage Center was flooded in March 2014, rendering the building useless for around a year.

The plaintiffs accuse Shawnee authorities of conspiring to cause the waterline to burst, saying the city's motive was retaliation for the tribe's decision to develop its own water and sewer system. The lawsuit claims city workers intentionally left the waterline uncapped and seeks to keep city employees off the tribe's land.

Members of the Shawnee city commission last week declined to comment to the newspaper. The city attorney says it has received the lawsuit but hasn't filed a response yet.
