TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby and his leadership team have been working with the city of Tupelo and the Natchez Trace Parkway to find a home for the Chickasaw Heritage Center.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports executive director of the Tupelo-based Chickasaw Inkana Foundation Brad Prewitt says the top priority is finding property that is culturally significant, accessible and available.

The foundation, which is a Mississippi nonprofit tasked with working to preserve, protect and interpret Chickasaw history and culture in the Chickasaw homeland, is helping to lead the effort to identify a site.

In 2013, Anoatubby visited Tupelo to talk with local leaders about the vision for the center, which was then estimated to cost between $5 and $6 million.
