ST. REGIS INDIAN RESERVATION, N.Y. (AP) – A fundraising campaign is underway to create a monument dedicated to members of the Mohawk Indian tribe in northern New York who served in the U.S. military.

The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh reports that a scale model of the proposed memorial is on public display at the Mohawk Tribal Community Building on Route 37 on the St. Regis Indian Reservation, also known as Akwesasne.

The proposed monument would feature the five official seals of the U.S. branches of military service, plus symbols representing the Iroquois Confederacy and the four Mohawk clans.

The Veterans Memorial Monument will eventually be erected at Generations Park off Route 37 on the reservation, which straddles the U.S.-Canada border.

Nearly $20,000 has been raised so far for the $75,000 project. Organizers hope to dedicate the monument next year.
