PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) – The Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians is celebrating the completion of a $2.25 million tribal wellness center in far northern Maine.

The center is a more than 8,000-square-foot facility located in Presque Isle. It’s shaped like an eagle.

The United States Department of Agriculture says it’s symbolic for the tribe because they believe the eagle brings a vision of rebirth and health to the Micmac tribal community.

The USDA provided the Micmacs with a loan of more than a half million dollars to assist in constructing the facility.

Other funding sources included the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the tribe itself.
