SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah’s governor and some members of the Navajo Nation are bringing their argument against a proposed national monument to Washington.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Gov. Gary Herbert held a press conference outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, declaring that his state neither wants nor needs the proposed 1.9-million acre Bears Ears National Monument.

Five members of the state’s federal delegation and three American Indians from San Juan County were also present at the press conference. The American Indians expressed concern that their traditional activities would be curtailed if President Barack Obama designates the Bears Ears area a national monument.

The Navajo Nation Council, however, says it is one of 26 southwestern Native American tribes that support the monument.
