PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) – Residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation say three helicopters tried to land at the site of Wounded Knee on Saturday.

They say they're upset because they consider it sacred ground. Charley New Holy says one helicopter landed briefly just 50 feet from a cemetery.

It's not known where the helicopters came from or why they tried to land on the site. The South Dakota National Guard said the helicopters did not belong to the Guard.

An estimated 300 American Indians were killed by the U.S. Cavalry in the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre.
