WASHINGTON (AP) – The Standing Rock Sioux Indian reservation will get a greater police presence through a new federal partnership.

Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota on Thursday announced the addition of 20 police officers for the reservation that straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border. Eleven of the officers start Monday, with the rest to follow in the near future. They'll be assigned to the reservation for six months.

Dorgan says Standing Rock has a high crime rate and not enough police officers to patrol the sprawling reservation.

Standing Rock is among four reservations to benefit from a federal program that partners the Bureau of Indian Affairs with branches of law enforcement. The goal is to reduce crime by 5 percent within a year.
