CONCHO, Okla. (AP) - The Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes' governor will keep her job despite being found guilty of 2 impeachable offenses by tribal legislators.
Twelve charges were brought against Gov. Janice Boswell although one was later dropped. Legislative clerk Anne Piper says a unanimous vote is required to find a tribal official guilty of an impeachable offense.
After a 2-day trial, Boswell was found guilty on Saturday of not submitting a 2011 tribal budget by June 1 and of the unconstitutional firing of an editor of the tribal newspaper.
On the remaining charges, the votes were consistently five guilty, one not guilty and two absent. Cheyenne legislator Bruce Whiteman was the one who voted Boswell not guilty.
The legislature said in a statement Monday that Boswell's removal "will ultimately be up to the people."
