MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) – The Muscogee (Creek) Nation is establishing a public database to help record the addresses of sex offenders living in the American Indian tribe's 11-county jurisdictional area.
The nation's tribal police, known as the Lighthorsemen, will be in charge of the registry. Tim Lawson, the program's sex offender registrar, says it will target serious offenders. He says misdemeanors will not be registered in the sex offenders database.
The program will cover about 5,000 square miles of Creek land in Creek, Hughes, Mayes, McIntosh, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Rogers, Seminole, Tulsa and Wagoner counties.
Lawson spent about six years working in a similar role with Tulsa police before joining the Lighthorsemen to help set up the program.
