FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) – Lawmakers on the country's largest American Indian reservation are convening for their last regular session Monday as an 88-member council.
Navajo voters will choose only 24 on Nov. 2, the result of a special election last year that was aimed at government reform. All but one of the 24 races includes an incumbent.
Among the items lawmakers will consider during their weeklong fall session in Window Rock is a measure to increase the number of lawmakers through a referendum vote in 2014.
Tribal member Carlos Mundy says he voted for a reduced council but wants proof it will save money as proponents said. If not, he says he might favor a larger council with smaller paychecks.
