IGNANCIO, Colo. (AP) – The chairman of Colorado's Southern Ute Tribe has stepped down amid allegations of mismanagement and a special election for a new chairman has been scheduled.

The Durango Herald reports that Matthew Box resigned as chairman by e-mail Feb. 10 just before he was set to meet with the council about their calls for him to step down.

Box didn't return calls seeking comment.

Tribal Councilman Jimmy Newton was appointed as acting chairman Feb. 11. A special election for a new chairman was set for April 12.

In a letter to Box, council members said he had refused to share information about “questionable personnel matters” and provided them with “inaccurate, misleading or incomplete information.” He has denied claims against him.

An effort to recall Box failed in December because not enough people voted.
