TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) – The chairman of the election commission for the Cherokee has announced his resignation, saying his reputation has been damaged by criticism he's received over the outcome of the recent chief election.
Roger Johnson released a statement to the Tulsa World on Tuesday saying his “honor character and integrity” have been damaged by bickering over the vote count that first had challenger John Baker beating Smith by 11 votes in an unofficial total.
The official count gave the election to incumbent Chad Smith followed by an announcement that Baker beat Smith by 266 votes.
Smith and Baker each held news conferences Tuesday to discuss their plans.
