BILLLINGS, Mont. (AP) – Crow lawmakers are calling for a federal investigation into the financial activities of the tribe's executive branch.

The Billings Gazette reports that tribal legislators passed the resolution on July 5 asking U.S. Attorney Michael Cotter to create a task force. They claim millions of dollars have been spent unlawfully without legislative authorization.

Chairman Cedric Black Eagle said in a statement that his administration has been fiscally responsible.

The resolution is the latest in a continuing squabble between the two branches of tribal government over financial control.

Lawmakers had passed an amendment requiring their approval when tribal spending varies from budget estimates.

Black Eagle vetoed that bill. The Legislature voted to override the veto in April, and executive branch attorneys are suing to have the law declared unconstitutional.
