AHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) – The Cherokee Nation's tribal council will hold a special meeting to discuss the tribe's election laws and an appointment to replace a election commissioner who resigned.

Cherokee Chief Chad Smith called the meeting for Friday at the request of the council's speaker, Meredith Frailey.

The council plans to address potential changes to the election law for the upcoming special election to determine who will fill the tribe's principal chief's post.

The tribe's Supreme Court threw out the results of the original June 25 election, saying it could not be determined with certainty whether Smith or longtime tribal councilman Bill John Baker received more votes.

The council also will address the nominations of the tribal marshal and attorney general. The terms for the current holders of the two offices are expiring.
