ADA, Okla. — The Chickasaw Nation legislature doubled the salaries for its executive branch leadership Friday.

The measure, which passed the Chickasaw legislature by a 10-3 margin Friday morning, also increases the salaries for the legislators and judiciary.

Gov. Bill Anoatubby, who has been in office since 1987, will receive an annual base salary of $600,000, plus an additional $50,000 for each completed term. The tribe contributes an amount equal to 30 percent of his salary to his retirement fund.

Prior to Friday’s legislation, Anoatubby received $300,000 annually dating back to 2007, when it was raised from $100,000.

Lt. Gov. Jefferson Keel will receive $400,000 annually, up from $200,000. Like Anoatubby, he receives a $50,000 bonus for each term and a similar retirement fund contribution.

Anoatubby and Keel ran unopposed for re-election earlier this summer.

The Chickasaw Nation has about 47,000 citizens. By comparison, the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, which has 310,000 citizens, is paid $124,812.84 after an 11 percent pay raise took effect earlier this month. The deputy chief receives $63,538.

The 13 legislators' monthly salaries will increase from $3,500 to $5,000, raising their annual income from $42,000 to $60,000. Their counterparts in Tahlequah earn $40,459 annually.

The legislators will also receive 5 percent raise per year for every term they serve in office, an increase of 1.5 percent. As per the tribe’s constitution, the tribe pays an amount equal to 25 percent of their salary into a retirement fund.

The tribe’s judiciary will also receive raises, upping their monthly salary from $3,000 to $4,000 with the possibility of a 5 percent annual raise. Their retirement plan is similar to the legislators.

A Chickasaw Nation spokeswoman said the tribe is required to evaluate all elected officials’ salaries every four years. Friday’s pay raise is the first for the Chickasaw’s judges and legislators in eight years.
