SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) – A Native American tribe in New Mexico says it has the right to ask residents of a tribal-owned mobile home community for proof of U.S. citizenship and proper immigration documentation.

The Tesuque Pueblo said in a statement late Tuesday that its tribal council made the decision on Tesuque Trailer Village residential requirement after “extensive discussion.”

Tribal officials also said Tesuque Trailer Village is tribally funded and doesn't receive U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funding.

Tesuque Pueblo is under fire after residents of Tesuque Trailer Village said they received notice that they must now provide proof of immigration status on the rental property 10 miles north of Santa Fe.

Under New Mexico law, illegal immigrants do not have to show they are legally in the U.S. to rent housing.
