MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Three-bedroom FEMA mobile homes used by residents displaced by last year’s Souris River flooding will be made available to Native American tribes in the Great Plains region.

Sens. John Hoeven and Kent Conrad, Rep. Rick Berg and Gov. Jack Dalrymple made the announcement after the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Bureau of Indian Affairs agreed to their request.

Most of the homes are in Minot, and they will be made available as soon as they’re not needed.

Three Affiliated Tribes Chairman Tex Hall says the trailers are welcome as the Bakken oil boom has created a severe housing shortage on the Fort Berthold Reservation.

Pete Davis, executive director of Turtle Mountain Housing Authority at Belcourt, says there are currently 112 families on a waiting list for housing.
