Abrams is executive director of the Iroquois Nationals and he was left to dwell on what was won and what was lost by refusing to travel to England on non-Native passports.
“Our only goal was to get them to see us … to get them to know us,” said James Swan, organizer of Rapid City’s new Urban Patrols – a program that’s designed to prevent conflict between Indians and non-Indians.

Tribe looking for alternate site for prison
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – Tohono O’odham officials say they no longer plan to build a federal detention facility on their tribal land north of Sahuarita and will begin looking for an alternative site.
The proposal to build a 750-bed facility on land within the tribe’s San Xavier District sparked community protests from nearby Sahuarita residents and was facing opposition from a growing number of community and government leaders.
The San Xavier District was hoping to build a 750-bed, 140,000-square-foot prison on 48 acres just east of the Santa Cruz River.
The prison would create around 300 jobs, and the tribe’s San Xavier District would be paid a percentage of the bed fee.
More than 2,500 Sahuarita residents signed a petition declaring their opposition to the project.
