Hualapai Tribe invests $2.2M in community’s sole market

PEACH SPRINGS, Ariz. (AP) – The Hualapai Tribe in northwestern Arizona has invested about $2.2 million to remodel the tribal community’s only grocery store.

The revamped Walapai Market opened earlier this year in a 5,600 square-foot building across from the Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs. The tribe previously leased out the space.

The building along Route 66 has a deli, butcher shop, bakery and gas station. The next closest services are about 15 miles away.

Tribal Chairwoman Sherry Counts says the new business will help diversify the tribe’s economy that relies heavily on tourism.

The tribe is known for operating the horseshoe-shaped glass bridge known as the Grand Canyon Skywalk outside the boundary of Grand Canyon National Park.
