KYLE, S.D. (AP) – Oglala Lakota College at Kyle marks its 40th anniversary April 2 with a luncheon and afternoon and evening powwow sessions.

The college on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is governed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe. It began as a community college and now offers baccalaureate degrees, along with certificate degrees and associate degrees.

Oglala Lakota College reports enrollment of around 1,400 students, with 900 of them the equivalent of full-time students.

College officials say it was one of the first tribally controlled colleges in the nation.
