FLANDREAU, S.D. (AP) – Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe officials have hired two police officers and signed a mutual aid agreement with Moody County following their decision to end a policing agreement with the city of Flandreau.

The Argus Leader reports that under the agreement with the Moody County Sheriff’s Office, deputies will be allowed to provide emergency backup for the newly formed tribal police force.

The tribe gave the city a 90-day notice in June that it’s ending a 16-year agreement, effective Friday. The move came a week before the tribe decided to grow and sell marijuana, which city officials attribute for the split.

But the tribe’s lawyer, Seth Pearman, says the decision stems from longstanding problems with the city’s police department. Pearman says officials expect to hire a third police officer by Friday.
