RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) – The Shoshone and Arapaho Tribal Court has failed a program review by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The Ranger of Riverton reports that according to the review, the tribal court failed to follow laws pertaining to case procedures, to require background investigations on court staff and to provide training to court staff, among other complaints.

The program review information was released as part of a motion in a lawsuit by the Northern Arapaho Tribe claiming the Shoshone Business Council and the BIA were violating the tribe’s right to self-govern.

The Shoshone Business Council argues it needs to help correct problems found in the review, but the Northern Arapahoe Tribe says the council doesn’t have the authority and that they are working to fix procedures independently.
