PORCUPINE, S.D. (AP) – Oglala Sioux police say a 34-day peaceful occupation of the elderly meals building in the town of Porcupine is over.

The Rapid City Journal reports that the protest by Lakota activists ended early Wednesday when a dozen tribal police removed several young protesters from the building without struggle. There were no elders present.

Activist Duane Martin Sr. and his Strong Heart Warrior Society launched the occupation over complaints of elder abuse, neglect and fraud.

Martin was released on a $500 cash bond Wednesday less than 12 hours after the early morning raid. Oglala Sioux Tribe Attorney General Rae Ann Red Owl says he faces seven charges related to the occupation.

As a condition of his release, Martin must remain off the Pine Ridge reservation pending his May 11 trial.
