The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma Environmental Office has initiated a system of community alerts which will notify area citizens of daily air quality forecasts via the Nixle automated notification system.

This system is being initiated during Clean Air Month in May and the start of the “ozone season.” This is the time of year when air quality is most important because of the increased possibility of ozone formation on hot, dry summer days. Those who subscribe to this free service will receive daily alerts advising them of the possibility of harmful air quality levels which might necessitate a curtailing of activities, especially for older adults, young children, and those who suffer from asthma, lung disease, or heart disease.

The Quapaw Tribe Environmental Office collects ambient air quality data around the clock from a monitoring site near Miami, OK and automatically submits their data to EPA’s AirNOW database. The Tribe’s data are used to generate the air quality forecast maps updated daily at www.airnow.gov.

Nixle is a secure communications service available to municipal, county, and state government agencies. There is NO spam or advertising associated with Nixle Municipal Wire messages. The system is available at no cost (standard text message rates apply for subscribers who do not have text plans with their cell phone providers) and citizens can subscribe at www.nixle.com.
