NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) – Members of the Eastern Pequot Tribe in southeastern Connecticut are seeking a recall vote for the entire tribal council after the council chairman disavowed a lawsuit seeking federal recognition of the tribe.

The Day of New London reports the tribe's war chief, Ashbow Sebastian, issued a statement over the weekend saying members want to recall the tribal council and will ask state and federal authorities to investigate.

The lawsuit filed in federal court last month seeks to overturn the 2005 rejection of the tribe's federal recognition application by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Tribal Chairman Jim Cunha says the council never authorized the filing of the lawsuit and will seek to have it withdrawn. Sebastian says the council previously approved the lawsuit. Cunha says that claim is false.
