COARSEGOLD, Calif. (AP) – A dispute between competing factions of a Central California Indian tribe continues to rage, with one side calling off the swearing-in ceremony of a new leader amid alleged threats.

The other side denied making threats, however, and told the Fresno Bee it had scheduled its own meeting at the same time in another city.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office said it did not receive any threat reports.

Trouble has been brewing within the Chukchansi tribal council since a disputed election in December. The clash involves the disenrollment of some tribal members, which many argued was an attempt to limit the numbers receiving payments from the group’s casino in Coarsegold.

In February, a standoff between the two sides at the tribal offices resulted in three people getting hurt during a fight.
